Play & Learn!

It’s comforting to know that a creative genius like Brian Eno, validates this fact. The fact is, that there is no right way of getting creative. If we can let ourselves go, and let go off the baggage of presumption, then we can open many other doors of possibilities. Each time I listen to this words, I can’t help but ponder and think about my own contribution to this world. The world of education and the many canvases ready to be painted on!

Creative Thinking using the 8 Steps based on Dr. Keith Sawyer’s awesome book Zig Zag!

It all begins with the big question! This was a rewarding brainstorm session and most of them were getting introduced to the basics of ideation.

They were given an assignment which is part of the important steps to creative thinking, which is the element of ‘play’. The assignment required them to create interactive pages as creatively as they could to communicate their selected interests. They could use many ways to do it, such through interactive storytelling, interactive artworks, pop-up style interaction and many others. Here are some highlights.

I discussed this in class the other day, how does mythology apply in today’s world? I drew lessons from Leornardo Da Vinci and Walt Disney, about the power of ideation and imagination. However, ideation and imagination is the strong basis of great storytelling.

Jonah Sachs, explains this context in his book, ‘Winning the Story Wars’ that drawing lessons from mythology is enables our thinking process to be more divergent rather than convergent. By looking at stories and mythologies, we are surround ourselves with many possibilities. What seems impossible then seem possible. It is the ultimate visual principle. Designing the way we view life. Design bridges the gap between the industry and the people. It does not do that through formulas but through effective storytelling.

Tim Kring, the creator of the hit series Heroes, explains why our abilities can be redefined as more than what it is through interconnection.

We are all connected in one way or another and our senses are made to work in harmony and to co-exist with each other. Heroes, is a metaphor which depicts not only the struggle of good and evil, but the struggle to make sense of this complex existence through our special abilities. Stories about heroes breaks new ground in the way we see superheroes today and as not only costumed vigilantes but real people and real individuals. Tim Kring’s contextual interpretation of that is great realised in a metaphoric and allegorical style of storytelling.
